Previewing the All-Star FanFest

7 07 2011

I spent a couple of hours at the media tour of the MLB All-Star FanFest at the Phoenix Convention Center today. It’s that big fan-friendly interactive thing that happens in every town that hosts an All-Star Game.

Yes, excitement is building here in the 602 for the annual Midsummer Classic. We still don’t know what the final American and National League rosters will look like, but we do know what FanFest will look like.

I covered some of the All-Star Game events for the Seattle Times back in 2001 when it was in Seattle. I went to the Celebrity Softball Game, the Home Run Derby and the game itself. Look at this list of celebrities that were in town. I think Jessica Biel made it sorta big right? And Thomas Jane, who stars in one of the great HBO shows, “Hung.”

OK enough with the past, let’s talk about today. Here are some photos from the media “hard hat” FanFest tour today. The “hard hat” was actually an old-school batting helmet from the 70s. We were all walking around looking like Alvin Dark or Ted Simmons or Dave Winfield.

I'm trying to tilt the helmet a little to the side like I'm all bad.

There looks like some cool stuff to do at this thing. It’s great for kids. Or anyone who wants to be a kid. You can get a photo of  yourself making a catch against a wall.

The Diamond is great for kids.

You can take a team photo with the 2011 Arizona Diamondbacks, one of the top teams in the majors, surprisingly.

Personally, I loved the Hispanic Heritage Wall and the World Baseball Classic tribute.

My favorite player of all time, Fernando Valenzuela. I have a couple of these cards!

And for those looking for something beyond a T-shirt or cap…. MLB hand puppets of the stars!!!

Read my SB Nation Arizona post about the FanFest tour. More photos if the words bore you!

And lastly, so glad I stayed behind the netting during batting practice. Those squishy balls on a line drive… oh hell no.
