Busy day on the writing front

I missed the Man. U. – Chivas de Guadalajara game tonight. How’d Chicharito do and did he really play each half for each team? What a great idea.

On a day when NFL training camps opened and/or  players reported to respective sites, I wrote about a big trade in MLS and recollections of training camp days when I covered the Seahawks.

Amazing how quickly Freddie Ljungberg fell out of favor with the Sounders. But the team looks like it is rounding into better form without him, so maybe it wasn’t such a bad move. When he was at his best, though, he made a big difference. I will remember the Toronto FC game, his first with the Sounders, last season, in which Ljungberg scored the team’s first-ever road goal in chilly BMO Field.

The guy wasn’t producing, let’s face it, and the Sounders are clearly about winning now, not retooling and rebuilding. Hard to believe this can be said, but the Sounders pay Ljungberg until November when he comes off the books, and they get a couple of conditional draft picks in return. Not the best deal in the world, but something is better than nothing.

As for NFL training camp, I’m hoping to go check out the Arizona Cardinals in Flagstaff next month. Training camp, in my days covering the NFL, was both dreaded and rewarding, as the work days were long, but I got in good shape working out and playing tennis and even saw a few movies and ate at some solid Spokane restaurants.

Cheney is a small town, but the weather was perfect in the summer, only getting really hot for a few days, and the Seahawks were a good bunch of guys to be around.
