Celebrating Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.!

31 05 2010

Our trip to Portland ended on a very happy note…driving down the street formerly known as 39th Ave. in Portland, forever more known as Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. This is the street renaming that my parents and sister fought hard for, a struggle that took about two years before the Portland City Council voted it in and began to add the street signs earlier this year.

Chavez, for those who don’t know, is a civil rights/human rights activist most famous for founding the United Farm Workers union. My father Jose was a big supporter of Chavez’ work and met the man on several occasions, even walked picket lines with him.

Here’s Chavez Blvd. in my hometown.

You’ll see that the original name, 39th Ave., remains, but the process of putting up Chavez Blvd. signs continues from block to block.

And finally, a good ol’ Northwest dark cloud, just for good measure. I’m back in Arizona now.
